Frequency is a measure of the number of repeating events per unit of time; it is calculated by counting the occurrences within a one-second interval and is expressed in hertz (Hz). For instance, if a lamp turns on and off 50 times per second, its frequency is said to be 50 Hz. The unit “hertz” is named after Heinrich Hertz, the German physicist who made significant contributions to this field.

In the fields of electrical engineering and electronics, frequency is also a defined characteristic of electrical signals. Consider a sine wave: it starts at zero voltage, rises to its peak voltage after a brief interval, decreases again, reverses direction upon reaching zero, drops to its minimum value, and finally returns to zero. This cycle may occur multiple times per second, and the number of repetitions is defined as the frequency of the sine wave. Any periodic wave whose value changes over time possesses a frequency. Electrical and electronic circuits are sensitive to frequency, and their characteristics change as the frequency varies.

Electrical and electronic engineers use a device known as a frequency meter to measure the frequency of specific waves. Frequency meters are available in both analog and digital versions, differing primarily in how they display the measured frequency. While some multimeters also include a frequency measurement function, the accuracy of a dedicated frequency meter is significantly higher than that of a standard multimeter.
